'Foster Grandparents' add experience, wisdom, and love to some Hartford preschools (Sarah Cody, WTNH, 2/6/19)

While singing songs or making crafts, some Hartford preschoolers turn to Isabel Guzman for guidance. She's not the official classroom teacher. She has a special role. "They call me Abuela," she says. Guzman is part of the Foster Grandparents Program, a partnership between the Nutmeg Big Brothers, Big Sisters and the Community Renewal Team.

'Untapped' talent engage skills training for better employment

Hector Marrero is beginning to understand the difference between a career and a job. The 21-year-old Hartford native had abandoned high school, adult education and other job-course programs. Nearly out of options, Marrero this spring enrolled in Hartford nonprofit Community Renewal Team's YouthBuild program for another shot at new learning opportunities, job training, meaningful employment and, ideally, a better life. Just months in, Marrero has earned his high school diploma, several construction certifications and a driver's permit. His goal now is to land a union job that pays a livable wage and provides growth opportunities.

'Helping Feed Hartford' event benefits more than 800 families

Hundreds of families in the greater Hartford area received about a weeks worth of food and essentials on Tuesday, at no cost to them. It's all part of the annual event, "Helping Feed Hartford,” which was held outside the Xfinity Theatre. The Community Renewal Team joined forces with Feed the Children, PepsiCo Frito-Lay, and PriceRite for the eighth annual event, benefitting about 800 families in the greater Hartford area.

Volunteers give back during Feed the Children event

It looked like another traffic jam getting into the Xfinity Theatre parking lot in Hartford Wednesday morning, but the performers were volunteers, distributing to each vehicle $300 worth of food and hygiene products. "Giving to the community to try to help everybody - that's excellent. That's the best thing we can do," Alfred Herger, normally a foreclosure preventer at Community Renewal Team, said.

East Windsor woman volunteers 35 years for Meals on Wheels

Kathy Crouch of East Windsor was recognized last week for her 35 years as a volunteer driver for the East Windsor branch of the Meals on Wheels program. Through the program, Crouch delivers nutritious meals on a weekly basis to local seniors and “shut-ins,” people confined to their homes as a result of medical constraints. The program currently is in need of more people like Crouch to help deliver meals for the Community Renewal Team, or CRT, based in East Hartford.

Blue with support: Students learn to value uniqueness on World Autism Awareness Day

It was a blue day at Head Start’s Lake Avenue unit Wednesday as the staff and students observed World Autism Awareness Day by participating in the “Light It Up Blue” campaign. The staff wore blue T-shirts and painted blue streaks in their hair, and the 3- and 4-year-olds participated in a variety of blue-themed activities, like finger painting and playing with blue stickers.

Generations Program gets Platinum Award in social work

HARTFORD— Community Renewal Team’s residential program for grandparents raising grandchildren has walked away with top honors in a national competition concerning excellence in case management. Generations, a campus for seniors and grandparents raising grandchildren in Northeast Hartford, won the Case in Point Platinum Award for Social Work recently at a luncheon held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
