TEAM’s GAIN Program off to a Successful Start

New things are happening at TEAM, Inc., the Community Action Agency serving low-income individuals and families residing in the Naugatuck-Housatonic Valley Region of the state.  TEAM’s Gaining Access to Independence Now (GAIN) program recently launched in May with funding from the Department of Social Services (DSS).

The program’s goal is to provide eligible individuals with access to hands-on vocational training and, eventually, connect them with a job opportunity.   TEAM’s approach to this program is holistic, and the agency provides wrap around services to all chosen participants.  Once a person is accepted, they meet with a case manager (if new to TEAM) and establish a baseline of basic needs and barriers to success that need to be addressed before they begin the program.

The goal of GAIN is to successfully train and place program participants in chosen vocational jobs.  Two cohort groups of ten individuals began the program in May and July, while a third and final cohort will begin in September.  Each participant is required to meet one-on-one with an assigned job developer and participate in monthly meetings with their cohort to assess progress and personal goals.  These meetings include resume writing and job interview training, and provide participants with a network of support to ensure successful completion.

GAIN has gotten a tremendous amount of positive feedback from those that have started the program.  On participant said, “GAIN has given me a new approach to life and is allowing me to be a better provider for my family in becoming the role model for my kids that I need to be,” while another noted, “TEAM and GAIN helped me from the brink of moving my kids to my mother’s home overseas, to being a productive worker in the home healthcare field.”

With so many applicants and interest in GAIN, TEAM hopes to continue to be able to offer the program in the future.  To find out more about GAIN, contact TEAM at (203) 736-5420.
