TVCCA and 97.7 WCTY Host Food Drive for New London County’s Hungry
TVCCA and 97.7 WCTY hosted their 18th annual food drive to benefit the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center November 3-4, 2016, at Big Y in Norwich.
More than 10,000 pounds of food was collected and will be distributed by the Food Center to more than 80 food pantries, shelters, child care centers, community meal sites, and programs for the elderly. All monetary donations will be used by TVCCA to support critical client needs through its Client Emergency Fund.
The issue of hunger in New London County can go unseen, but the holiday season helps put the issue into the limelight. TVCCA executive director Deborah Monahan hopes people can grasp the year-round severity of hunger. “Sometimes it’s just a little bit of food assistance that keeps a family from falling into crisis. We see families who are really trying to remain self-sufficient, but just need a little help with food to get them through the month. That is what this food drive is meant to help,” Monahan says.
