Community Action Responds to Hurricanes Irma and Maria

CAFCA | November 17, 2017 |

The state’s Community Action Agency Network is providing critical disaster relief assistance to Hurricane Irma and Maria evacuees relocating to Connecticut.  So far, hundreds of people in need have been served by the state’s Community Action Agencies (CAAs). And, they want to make sure others who need food, shelter, heat, child care, and other basic services know that help is available.

Connecticut’s CAAs connect people with the services they need by using a customer-focused, integrated service delivery system. Through this unique and effective approach, people can enter into a CAA for any reason and get connected to programs, services, and resources to help meet their short and long-term needs. CAAs are working with local and state partners, as well as other community-based organizations, to help ensure that anyone who needs help and support receives it.

Reports are showing the highest concentration of evacuees in Hartford, Waterbury, New Britain, New Haven, Windham, and Meriden. Serving all 169 cities and towns across the state, CAAs are entrenched in these communities—and in every community—across Connecticut, and are well-equipped to meet the needs of those displaced by the hurricanes.

Community Action Agencies (CAAs) are the state and federal designated antipoverty agencies that provide basic human needs services like food, shelter, energy and heating assistance, housing, child care, and case management to Connecticut’s limited income individuals and families.

If anyone affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria need assistance, contact your Community Action Agency immediately. To find and your local agency, please refer to the table below, which includes each CAA’s general and case management phone numbers; or, visit www.cafca.org/network.
