Lamont, Bysiewicz Speak to Importance of Minimum Wage Increases, Support HRA
With national economic pressure continuing to put Connecticut families in ever tougher situations, Gov. Ned Lamont and Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz spoke about the importance of Connecticut minimum wage raises and support of organizations like the Human Resources Agency of New Britain in providing social, educational, and financial assistance to families. “We got it done in Connecticut,” Lamont said.
Childcare Center in Waterbury Gets Funding from State to Help Support Services
The state is putting more than $200,000 into one of TEAM, Inc.'s childcare centers in Waterbury. Using federal funds, the Lamont administration has committed to bolster childcare statewide. It’s part of the state’s strategy to help the economy. “You can’t have a conversation, a meaningful solutions-based conversation around mental health, if you’re not starting in early childhood, if you’re not starting at childcare,” said David Morgan, President and CEO of TEAM, Inc.
CT Child Tax-Rebate Application Open Through July 31
Connecticut parents can apply for the state Child Tax Rebate through July 31. Anti-poverty advocates say the money will serve as additional relief for families struggling with pandemic and inflation challenges. State residents with kids 18 years old or younger can apply for the tax rebate, which was created as part of the fiscal year 2023 budget. Families within a certain income threshold can receive up to $250 per child for three kids, a maximum of $750.
Beth-El Center, TEAM, Inc. Join to Aid COVID-Impacted Households
Beth-El Center, a homeless shelter and soup kitchen in Milford, is partnering with TEAM Inc., a nonprofit human services agency in the Valley, to provide housing services and financial aid to individuals who’ve experienced hardship as a result of the COVID pandemic. This short-term housing assistance program will provide up to 15 households who have been negatively impacted by the pandemic with housing assistance, financial aid and case management services.
Residents Urged to Apply for Child Tax Credit
The Lamont administration came to New London on Tuesday as part of its statewide child tax credit media tour. Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz and state Rep. Sean Scanlon, D-Guilford, a co-chair of the state legislature’s finance committee, along with Rep. Anthony Nolan, D-New London, New London Mayor Michael Passero and members of the Thames Valley Council for Community Action, or TVCCA, touted the tax credit during a news conference at City Hall.

Metropolitan District Urges Customers with Overdue Water Bills to Seek Assistance. Here’s How.
Metropolitan District customers with overdue and unpaid balances on their water bills are urged to apply for financial relief through the Connecticut Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program, according to the agency. LIHWAP, a one-time water assistance grant program for eligible households, is administered by the state Department of Social Services and Community Action Agency partners, according to the MDC.
Thames Valley Council for Community Action Executive Director to Retire After 49 Years with Agency
Deborah Monahan started working at Thames Valley Council for Community Action fresh out of college in 1973 and ended up staying for 49 years, the past 24 as head of the agency that serves thousands of New London County residents each year through its offices in New London and Norwich. Monahan will retire Dec. 31 as executive director and CEO of the TVCCA. The nonprofit agency provides a broad range of services.

Lena Rodriguez, CEO and president of the Community Renewal Team in Hartford, CT, will give the commencement address at Eastern Connecticut State University’s 132nd Commencement Exercises on May 17. The graduation takes place in the XL Center in Hartford, with the formal program beginning at 6 p.m. Rodriguez will also receive an honorary degree from Eastern during the commencement exercises.
